The Festival will be inaugurated on Friday 07 December 2007 at 6 pm at Max Mueller Bhavan, 8 Pramathesh Barua Sarani (Ballygunge Circular Road), Kolkata 700 019, by Rituparno Ghosh, the eminent filmmaker, with Mrinal Sen as Guest of Honour, and Robin Mallick, Director, Dresden Film Festival, and Michael Greif, representing Ecomove International, Hamburg, as Distinguished Guests. Guests and speakers on stage will include Dr Reimar Volker, Director, Goethe Institute / Max Mueller Bhavan Kolkata; Sanjay Budhia, Managing Director, Patton India Limited; Christian Chatton, Director, Alliance Fracaise du Bengale; Samik Bandyopadhyay, Trustee, Kalpanirjhar Foundation; Goutam Ghose, Chairman, Kalpanirjhar Foundation. S V Raman will be Master of Ceremonies.
This year’s highlights will be:
- International Selections, curated by Robin Mallick, Director, Dresden Film Festival, who will be present to introduce the films from Germany, France, Spain, the UK, Canada, the Netherlands, Italy, Poland, Belgium, Norway;
- The Supinfocom package: strikingly innovative works in animation graphics from School of Higher Education specializing in Computer Graphics, Arles and Valenciennes, France;
- Awardwinners at the Capalbio Festival, one of the world’s best known short film festivals;
- Voyages en courts, a selection of French short films chosen by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of France, several of them shot outside France;
- Retrospective of films by German director Veit Helmer (b. 1968), who, before launching into his career in features with Tuvalu in 1998, had done a series of shorts employing the typical gestures, dramatic storylines and comic exaggeration of the silent film, and then collaborations with film students in Jakarta, Tashkent, Almaty, Tbilisi and Baku; developing a style of his own;
- Selection of Basque short films from Spain;
- Hamburg Media School selections;
- A selection of award winners from Prix Jeunesse International 2006 promoting excellence in Children’s TV;
- Indian films competing for the first Patton Award for the Best Indian Short Fiction Film of the Year at the Kalpanirjhar Festival.
As in earlier years, the screenings will be held every day, 8 – 11 December 2007, from 4 pm to 9 pm, with additional screenings on Saturday and Sunday, 8 & 9 December at 2 pm – of the Prix Jeunesse International 2006 awardwinners and Indian Competitive Section respectively.
Over the years, the Kalpanirjhar Audience Nominations have grown in prestige, and are valued by nominees who have received special citations recording selections made by festival viewers. On the last day, for the valedictory session, spectators will join in an open discussion on the films of their choice, preceding the screening of a couple of surprises.
