8th Kalpanirjhar International Short Fiction Film Festival held
at
Max Mueller Bhavan, Kolkata

 
The 8th Kalpanirjhar International Short Fiction Film Festival 2010, held on the regular dates from 1 – 5 November 2010 was inaugurated by Paul Holmes from the Screen Academy who also conducted a 3-day Scriptwriting Workshop for young filmmakers The Festival featured 80 films from 19 countries and had a viewership of more than 2000 over five days. The Patton Award for the best Indian entry carrying a cash prize of INR 20,000 went to Narmeen entered by the Film and Television Institute of India, Pune and directed by Dipti Gogna. The Jury also gave special mention to Reflections directed by Swati Khatri (FTII) and Nungee Mit (Eye of an 'I') directed by Chaoba Thiyam. The response to the Festival from the viewers and the media was very encouraging.

The Third Vivada-Kalpanirjhar Annual Lecture was held on the scheduled date of 1 April 2011. As a tribute to Rabindranath Tagore on the occasion of his 150th birth anniversary, Mr Samik Bandyopadhyay, scholar, editor and eminent theatre and film critic spoke on the topic Towards a Visionary Cinema: Notes on Rabindranath Tagore and Cinema. The lecture in the auditorium of Goethe-Institut/Max Mueller Bhavan Kolkata was followed by an interesting interactive session. The Vivada Award for the best film script could not be awarded for the second year running as the Jury unanimously decided that none of the scripts submitted merited an award.

The 9th Kalpanirjhar International Short Fiction Film Festival now brings you 75 films from 14 countries. This year the Festival received 66 Indian entries, out of which 40 have been selected for screening at the Festival and 28 have been short-listed for the Patton Award 2011 to be announced on the last day of the Festival. This year too, we look forward to attendance and encouragement of a large number of cineastes, filmmakers and students of cinema and communication
